The State Historical Society of Missouri, in collaboration with the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, is inviting the public to view a new exhibit now through Nov. 5.

The new exhibit, Mr. Pruitt’s Possum Town: Trouble and Resilience in the American South, is a free exhibit sponsored by the National Endowment of the Humanities and curated by Berkley Hudson who is an associate professor emeritus of the University of Missouri. The exhibit presents photographs by Otis Noel Pruitt, a white photographer who documented life in the segregated town of Columbus, Mississippi, from 1920-1960.

Seventy-five of the exhibition’s photos are on display in the State Historical Society’s Art Gallery, and another 25 images are at the Reynolds Journalism Institute on the MU campus.

A public open house reception with the curators is set for 4-6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the State Historical Society of Missouri, Center for Missouri Studies, at 605 Elm St.  The public is invited to visit the exhibitions during regular visitor hours at the SHSMO Art Gallery Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and each Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
