Fundraisers gathered on the rooftop of Quinton's in The District for "Let's Talk!" The Sept. 20 event, organized by Kate Quinn and Ann Cardetti, was successful in raising more than $22,000 in support of the MU Speech and Hearing Clinic and the MU Robert G. Combs Language Preschool. Members of the Columbia Valley RiteCare Board presented a check for $15,000 to the Department of Communication Science and Disorders in the MU School of Health Professions in their continuing support of children with speech, language and literacy problems in the mid- Missouri area. Mary Lee Johnston Community Learning Center held its 4th Annual fundraiser on October 19, 2011 at Johnston Paint and Decorating. This year the event featured chairs, chests, etc. that were painted by local artists and friends and were auctioned off at the event. Money raised will help support Mary Lee Johnston’s vision to provide quality affordable childcare to those families in need. MLJCLC currently enrolls 80+ children ages 6 weeks to 6 years. Inside Columbia's Phat Guys hosted their second annual Phat Guys Open on Oct. 10 at LA Nickell Golf Course. The 4-person scramble attracted more than 20 teams to compete with Bob Pugh taking the first swing. Golfers enjoyed a perfect day for golf along with the company of the MO-X models, barbecue and bar service. Proceeds from the tournament benefited the Sol House of the Rainbow House. Joe Machens BMW hosted its annual Oktoberfest party on Oct. 4 featuring music from a live German oompah band at the festive gathering. On Saturday, August 27th, Little Dixie Kiwanis Club held its first annual ice cream social and old-fashioned ice cream making contest. Six teams participated in the competition where they were required to turn out a hand cranked batch of ice cream that could be judged against others by a group of willing volunteer judges. The Central Missouri Mustang and Ford Club brought some beautiful cars to share and a good time was had by all. Proceeds from the event will benefit the children of the Columbia area.

Crawfish Boil In the Shadow Of the Columns (50 photos)
Museum Associates hosted its Crawfish Boil fundraiser on Sept. 16 for the Museum of Art and Archaeology. More than 165 guests were treated to Cajun cooking by Master Chef Brook Harlan who boiled crawfish on the Francis Quadrangle. Other foods served were jambalaya, muffelattas, pralines, bread pudding and beer donated by Flat Branch Pub & Brewing. Vitae Foundation Benefit (16 photos)
Michael Reagan, eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, came to Columbia June 12 to speak at the Vitae Foundation Pro-Life Benefit, hosted by George and Joni Pfenenger. The Pfenengers hosted 63 people at their home in an effort to raise funds for Vitae's mass media efforts in mid-Missouri and across the country. Vitae's media campaigns help reach women facing unplanned pregnancies. Vitae's presence in the Columbia media market has included television and radio ads, including ads on the Tiger Network during MU football and basketball games, the Columbia Add Sheet and the Cardinal Radio Network in 2011. Fashionably Chic Shopping Soiree (28 photos)
Lutheran Family and Children's Services held its 5th Annual Shopping Soiree to benefit the families served in the mid-Missouri region through adoption services and crisis pregnancy counseling. Visitors from as far away as Hawaii joined local wine and food aficionados for Inside Columbia's annual Wine & Food Festival, May 16-21. The weeklong festival included events such as Wine & Art, a fundraiser for the local teen shelter Sol House; the Local Chefs Showcase, an elegant dinner featuring courses prepared by Columbia's most talented chefs; and the Grand Tasting, where attendees could sample from among more than 400 different wines and enjoy food prepared by great local restaurants. Kari Laudano of Logistique Studio created the Innocence Gala, a fundraiser to benefit Rainbow House. Michele Spry of Midway Electric, Inc. hosted the event on June 4 at the Elm Street Ballroom. The evening featured a talk and book signing with Antwone Fisher, a famous author, director and screenwriter. The evening raised $23,000 for Rainbow House, whose mission is to keep children safe and to support families in crisis through prevention, assessment and intervention in child abuse and neglect. Coaches For Kids Celebrity Golf Classic (9 photos)
Nearly 30 celebrity coaches, including baseball Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog, MU head football coach Gary Pinkel and former MU Tiger football player and NFL assistant coach Johnny Roland, joined more than 100 local golfers in raising a record $77,450 for MU Children’s Hospital. The first-ever MPIX Coaches for Kids Celebrity Golf Classic was held June 13 at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia.

Dancing With Missouri Stars (12 photos)
The 5th Annual Dancing With Missouri Stars, held May 5 in the Hearnes Center, raised more than $109,000 for the Missouri Contemporary Ballet. Missy Martinette Hills from Lake of the Ozarks claimed the 2011 championship, followed by first runner-up Jennifer Bukowsky and second runner-up Barb Schlemeier. Two dancers tied for the Judge’s Choice award: Billy Giordano and Barb Schlemeier.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted renowned college football coach Bobby Bowden at a special event at The Crossing on April 19. Bowden spoke to a packed auditorium about coaching, life experiences and his book, Called To Coach, Reflections on Life, Faith and Football. Bowden became the second-winningest coach in major college football history, guided Florida State University to more than 300 victories and led the Seminoles to 28 straight bowl games during his 34-year tenure. Coach Bowden was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the largest Christian sports organization in America, focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. Inside Columbia magazine partnered with the Columbia Professional Firefighters, Zimmer Radio Group and Woodcrest Chapel to host the One-for-One Holiday Food Drive for the Central Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri on Dec. 16. The Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre hosted the first-ever Mid-Missouri's Got Talent competition on Nov. 6 at the SoHo Club. The 15 finalists competed in two categories, Most Talented and Most Money Raised. Votes were purchased for $1 per vote and the contestants were allowed to raise votes before the event. Celebrity judges were Monica Senecal, Daryl Vaughan, Hank Waters and Karen Grundy. The Salute To Veterans Corp. annual "thank-you" party for sponsors and volunteers attracted more than 100 to the Elks Club on Oct. 24. Hosted by Head Motor Company/KIA, the Sunday-afternoon gathering also served as the "Lift-Off" event for the 23rd annual Salute To Veterans Memorial Day weekend celebration and air show in 2011. Emcee Mark Comley rang the Ship's Bell as the names of demonstration teams, events and their supporters went up on the Wish List boards. The Missouri Contemporary Ballet kicked off its fifth season with a fall fundraising party at the home of Jeff and Jill Smith on Oct. 14. The evening included an auction of an original painting entitled Over the Edge by local artist David Spear. The image will grace the fall performance poster and program. MCB will perform Over the Edge at The Blue Note on Nov. 20 and 21. The 4th annual College of BBQ Knowledge was held at Machens Toyota on Oct. 28. In partnership with N.H. Scheppers Distributing Co., the event also included a Beer Festival where guests could sample from 12 Oktoberfest microbrews. Guests also enjoyed barbecue prepared by the experts at Spicewine Ironworks plus appetizer and fresh "grilled" chocolate chip cookies from the guys The Green Egg. Everyone gathered to learn grilling techniques from Chef Brook Harlan and the American Royal Sauce Champions team from Spicewine Ironworks. Les Bourgeois Vineyards held a deliciously spooky Haunt Cuisine Wine Dinner on Oct. 14 at the Les Bourgeois Bistro in Rocheport, MO. Guests enjoyed an appetizer reception paired with Winemaker's Select Rose & Les Bourgeois Brut. Then a three course seated dinner guided by Chef Aaron Wells-Morgan & Winemaker Cory Bomgaars featuring Missouri Beef. An arrangement of desserts & gourmet cheeses paired with Dessert Wines was served as well. Following the dinner guests joined on the point under the fall sky to enjoy coffee, a dessert reception, & after dinner drinks. Job Point's Celebrity Apprentice (28 photos)
Job Point hosted mid-Missouri’s first “Celebrity Apprentice” – a take off on NBC’s all-star show. Local business-savvy contestants competed in unique tasks around Columbia, using their talents, “fame” and business acumen to win challenges, while ultimately raising money and awareness for Job Point, Missouri’s premier employment center. All of the challenges were judged by “The Boss”, Mr. Fred Parry, in the boardroom at The Blue Note on Thursday, October 21st. The four teams raised over $11,000 through their team activities.

Freedom By Fashion Event (13 photos)
The Central Missouri Stop Human Trafficking Coalition hosted its first annual fashion show, Freedom by Fashion, to raise awareness and funds for victims of human trafficking in mid-Missouri. The runway show included fair trade outfits provided by the Mustard Seed Fair Trade, Leroy Fishstix Designs, independent fashion designers from the community and students on the Stephens College fashion department. Great American Burger Challenge 2010 (16 photos)
The two-month long Great American Burger Challenge came to an end at Stadium Grill on Sept. 30. Challengers Tom Bradley, Chris Belcher, T.J. Cleveland, Mike Kelly, Bob McDavid and Roger Wilson each created his own burger recipe and let the voters decide which one was best. Beneficiaries of this generosity included the Central Missouri Honor Flight, the Assistance League of Mid-Missouri, Granny's House, the Central Missouri Food Bank, the Voluntary Action Center and Segs4Vets. Inside Columbia's Phat Guys hosted a Phat Guys Open on Oct. 11 at LA Nickell Golf Course. The 4-person scramble attracted more than 20 teams to compete. Golfers enjoyed a perfect day for golf along with the company of the Mo-X models, barbecue and bar service. Proceeds from the tournament benefited the Sol House of the Rainbow House. More than 200 fashion enthusiasts attended Inside Columbia's first-ever fashion event, Velocity, on Sept. 21 in the Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall on the Stephens College campus. Guests enjoyed signature cocktails and hors d'oeuvres followed by a runway show and after-party. Mistress of Ceremonies Amy Susan entertained the crowd as fashions from local boutiques were modeled by Stephens College's fashion students. Featured boutiques include Belle, Binghams, Breeze, Britches Clothing, Dillard's, Elly's Couture, Girl and Swank. Scouted beforehand, the top 10 Karaoke performers went head to head to become the first ever Superstar Columbia. The Alzheimer’s Association honored longtime supporter Sen. Kit Bond as he retired from his legislative seat in Washington, D.C., with the Roast of Sen. Kit Bond on July 24. The event brought together 350 supporters for a night of jabs and stings and a whole lot of fun. In total, $95,000 was raised in gross proceeds, which will all benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. To thank members for their support, EPIC (Emerging Professionals In Columbia) hosted a happy hour at Harpo’s to celebrate its fourth anniversary. A ribbon-cutting with the Chamber Ambassadors kicked off the party for the reopening of Harpo’s. EPIC’s first event was held on July 20, 2006, at MoJo’s when a few dedicated chamber volunteers decided to see if young professionals would be interested in getting together to network. Columbians met at Walt's Bicycle, Fitness & Wilderness Co. on July 14 for the third annual Ride with Carl for Sam fundraiser. NASCAR celebrity Carl Edwards hosted the event in honor of his friend Sam Russell who was involved in a biking accident that left him paralyzed. Using a new hand bike, Sam was able to join Edwards and participants on the ride from Walt's to McBaine on the Katy Trail. The ride benefited the Sam Russell Helmet Safety Foundation. Golfers came out 140 strong to play in the Inaugural John Anderson Celebrity Golf Invitational presented by Midwest Computech on June 28 at the Country Club of Missouri. The Missouri Contemporary Ballet held the 4th annual Dancing With Missouri Stars on May 5 at the Hearnes Center. This year’s DWMS Champion was Connie Pugh, 1st Runner Up was John Glennon, and 2nd Runner Up was Wendy Howe. Bill Rotts was awarded the “Judge’s Choice.” Other competitors included Auben Galloway, Scott Gibson, Renee Hulshof and Elly Swetz. Inside Columbia's Wine & Food Festival 2010 (56 photos)
Inside Columbia magazine hosted its third annual Wine & Food Festival May 17–22. The weeklong festivities started with a Wine & Art auction. With the help from art instructors David Spear, Josh Oxenhandler and Paul Jackson, 12 local celebrities painted Columbia-inspired masterpieces for auction, which raised more than $14,000 for Rainbow House’s Sol House. Festival-goers enjoyed a variety of diverse menus as they dined at their selection of eight wine dinners at local restaurants. The Winemaker Dinner produced rave results with its stunning flair and atmosphere featuring chef Emily Bruegge’s creation’s and Pedroncelli wines presented by Richard Morehouse. Friday evening’s Grand Tasting at the Holiday Inn Executive Center featured more than 400 wines, handcrafted beers and fabulous food from the wine dinner restaurants. To wrap up the festival, Saturday’s Sip & Shop participants took advantage of exclusive shopping discounts at more than 20 local retailers and enjoyed

Night at the Speedway 2010 (15 photos)
Racing fans and supporters of the Vincent P. Gurucharri MD. Foundation, Inc attended the 5th annual “Night at the Speedway” at the Holiday Inn Executive Center on April 13. Honorary Chairs Nancy Sterling and Kenny Edwards, Carl Edwards’ mother and brother, assisted with a live auction of racing memorabilia, gourmet dinners and silent auction items donated from the community to support the Vincent P. Gurucharri MD Foundation. KFRU 1400’s The Closers started the event with a live evening broadcast. The highlight of the evening was a surprise visit from Carl Edwards who answered questions from the audience and talked about his racing experiences. The foundation provides financial support to patients undergoing cancer treatment living in eight mid-Missouri counties. Since 2006, the foundation has distributed more than $139,000 to assist cancer patients for medications, medial equipment, transportation and personal needs determined by social workers.
