Let the (Dog) Games Begin
From running, jumping and even solving puzzles there is no limit to what man’s best friend will do to show off its competitive prowess. Here are some of the businesses and organizations in Columbia that cater to a canine’s need for a challenge.
Big Muddy Dock Dogs (http://www.bigmuddydockdivers.com/): If your dog loves the water, they might be successful at dock diving. The popular aquatic sport, in which dogs are judged on how far they can jump into water from a raised platform, is the focus of Big Muddy Dock Dogs. The club practices at Columbia Second Chance and travels to compete at both in and out of state events.
Columbia Canine Sports Center (http://www.columbiak9sportscenter.com/): Active dogs will feel at home at Columbia Canine Sports Center. The facility’s instructors are ready to teach agility, obedience, rally, conformation, tracking and more. Classes for basic discipline are also available. Outside of class, you can continue to train if you purchase a membership that includes 24/7 key card access to the building and all equipment.
Dog Olympics (http://www.lizziandroccos.com/events.html): On August 4, Lizzi & Rocco’s Natural Pet Food Market will host the Dog Olympics. The games will include treat-loaded puzzles, focus and obedience tests and the opportunity to show off freestyle tricks. Some events like the Musical Sit and the Tower of Willpower require human and dog to be teammates while other events like the Garbage Disposal will let the pups shine on their own. Entry into each game is $1 per dog. All participants get prizes, but the winners receive their own Olympic medals. There will be also be a raffle for a Nina Ottosson Interactive Game. All proceeds will benefit Dogs Deserve Better.
Show Me Agility Club (http://www.showmek9.com/): Dogs of all breeds and experience levels are welcome at this nonprofit performance club. The group’s members meet the first Wednesday of each month at the Columbia Canine Sports Center and hold several shows throughout the year such as American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club agility, obedience and rally trials.
Go for the gold with your canine companion this summer!
